ECN (engineering change notice)
An engineering change notice (ECN) is the formal broadcast that an approved engineering change is now in effect. Where the change request proposes and the change order authorizes, the notice informs: it tells procurement, manufacturing, quality, service, and often the customer what changed, which part numbers and revisions are affected, and the date the change takes effect.
In one sentence
An approved change that nobody hears about is barely better than no change at all — the ECN closes the loop between decision and execution.
Why it matters
Engineering can authorize a part substitution on Monday, and if procurement doesn’t learn of it until the next order cycle, the old part gets bought anyway. Skipping the notice — or sending it late, or sending it to the wrong people — is how organizations discover a part-number mismatch on the receiving dock instead of in a review meeting.
How it works in practice
The ECN follows the ECO. Once the change order is approved and implemented — new revision released, documents updated — the notice goes out. Example: after the ECO replacing an end-of-life capacitor is implemented and the board moves from rev C to rev D, the ECN goes to procurement (stop buying the old MPN, start buying the new one), to manufacturing (rev D is the buildable revision as of the June build), to the contract manufacturer (updated Gerbers and assembly drawing attached), and to service (field replacements use rev D spares). Each recipient gets the same facts, in writing, with a date.
Common failure modes
The notice is the change order. Teams conflate authorization with communication: the ECO is approved in PLM, and everyone assumes the system “notified” the right people. PLM notifications go to whoever happens to be on the distribution list, which was set up three reorgs ago. Manufacturing learns about the change when the new parts arrive.
Effectivity without revision pairing. The ECN announces the new revision but doesn’t confirm that every artifact moved together. Procurement buys to the new BOM while the fab still holds the old Gerbers — the notice was accurate and the build is still wrong.
Notice without comprehension. A one-line ECN — “Part 12345 superseded by 67890” — tells procurement what to buy but not why, so when the substitute has a longer lead time or a different footprint, the downstream consequences surface as surprises instead of plans.
The customer is forgotten. For regulated or safety-critical products, customers and contract manufacturers are affected functions too. An ECN process that stops at the company’s walls leaves the people actually building the product working from stale data.
