What it does and how it connects
ato-eda-mcp is an MCP server that turns a text circuit description written in the atopile (.ato) language into a KiCad board. The agent edits the .ato source, then the server builds a netlist, PCB, and BOM, places footprints, routes with freerouting, and checks the result with KiCad's design rule check, all without a graphical session.
It exposes MCP tools for creating projects, reading and writing the .ato source, building, laying out, routing, checking DRC, fetching the BOM with real LCSC part numbers, rendering the PCB to SVG, and exporting Gerbers, drill files, and pick-and-place data. Tools return artifact paths rather than images, so the MCP client renders them.
The setup requires atopile, KiCad 10 (kicad-cli and the pcbnew Python module), and freerouting. The README states placement is a naive square grid suited to small reference designs of about a dozen parts, and that a readable schematic needs a separate declarative spec authored by the caller, since layout is derived from connectivity.
