What it does and how it connects
mcp-kicad-sch-api exposes the kicad-sch-api Python library as MCP tools so AI agents can create, modify, and analyze KiCad schematic files. It installs with pip and works over standard MCP stdio transport, with setup documented for Claude Desktop and Claude Code.
Its tools cover creating schematics, adding components, searching KiCad symbol libraries, adding wires and nets, hierarchical sheets and labels, listing components, and reading schematic information. The README states the file format is preserved exactly for KiCad compatibility.
Requirements are Python 3.10 or later, KiCad for symbol libraries, and the kicad-sch-api library. There is no PCB layout, routing, or manufacturing export in this server; it stops at the schematic.
Real user voices
I just did a pip install, setup the KICAD_SYMBOL_DIR to /usr/share/kicad/symbols. Added the mcp using claude mcp add. Then I asked claude to do a schematic for testing, and I see the following errors: search_components, Component search functionality not available.
